The CrossFit Open
Yes! The CrossFit Open is a competition. Yes! It does challenge you in ways you never really thought a workout would challenge you. No! You do not have to be a serious athlete to compete. No! You do not have to have experience or get in shape first to do the Open. I could go on, but we all have things to do and workouts to slay- so let me get to my point. The CrossFit Open is the best way to measure your overall health and wellness. The ability to do work at high intensity, move with quality and purpose, no matter what variation of movements is a better measure of health than any pill we take, any food we eat, or any scale we hop on. Why? Simply because measuring our fitness is the best way to help us, if we have to take medication, eat the right amount and quality of food, and feel confident when we do hop on the scale. If you want a simpler answer, Motion is lotion, or even better: Movement Saves lives.

We believe we are saving lives through movement, and through the Open, we can see year in and year out how people get in or stay in shape as we get older- whether you were a professional athlete or never competed in any sports. The Open is for you. We all have a choice to make and it boils down to this concept: you can look back on yesterday and talk about all the things you used to be able to do, or you can look to tomorrow and talk about all the great things still to come. I’ve done a lot of things in my life that I am very proud of, and if you want me to talk about them please just ask. I am more than willing to tell you many tales but that is not what motivates me, and if you think about it I am sure it’s not what motivates you. We can do so much more in life and a lot of us think we are just too old to do things once we reach 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, or older. Personally I disagree. I know I am no longer 23 or even 33 at this point and I can accept that I have slowed down in recent years but that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop. We always have to adjust and if there is one thing I know to be true that is that movement trump's excuses, time, and money. At all costs stay moving and your life will be spectacular!
When I was 30 years old a guy called me a “has-been” and I couldn’t help but think of how pathetic of an outlook that was on life, and how he had probably given up and thought his best days were behind him. Therefore, he tried to force his negative value onto me and I wasn’t going to let that happen. So what did I do? I knew if he held himself to his old standards he was never going to be happy and if I did the same I wasn’t going to be happy either- so I searched for something that I could do forever: no matter my age, ability, race, or size. Ten years ago I found CrossFit and have been doing it ever since. The main reason I fell in love with CrossFit is that I was able to see where I was as an athlete. I thought I was a decent athlete and I soon found out how much work needed to be done because of the Open and basic movements like burpees, overhead squats, box jumps, and running. However, it gave me a baseline to improve each year, each month, each day chipping away at little skills that eventually brought on more challenging skills, difficult movements, and heavier weights. I filled in the gaps in my fitness and continue to do so and it has been just as rewarding if not more rewarding as I have gotten older than when I was young and in my prime. So now I can say two things with certainty- I am a healthy person and I can still get better. That is what I want for everyone. My hope for all of us is that we come to realize how attainable it truly is to see progress. We simply must keep moving!
